Carnaval season is here! There are several cool events going on before Carnaval, and then Sambaxé will be hosting our own Carnaval celebration at Ruta Maya. Here are some details:
- Samba Dance Class
Laura Strausberg and Gabriella Masala will be teaching a samba dance class at Nia Space. The classes are on Saturdays at 3 - 4 pm. For more information call 443-3013 or 797-7644. Learn to samba and have some fun before Carnaval!
- Samba School Open Rehearsals - CANCELLED!!
The Samba School will be holding open rehearsals at Ruta Maya on February 6th and 12th. In Brazil the samba schools have weekly open rehearsals, which are more like big neighborhood parties. In that tradition, the samba school wants to invite everyone to open rehearsals - a great time to perfect those samba moves before Carnaval, or to simply enjoy the samba groove. The rehearsals will be 6:30 - 8:30, and there is no cover charge.
- World Carnaval at Ruta Maya, February 21st
Sambaxé, Brazil Funk, Capoeira Evolução, and the samba school will all be performing, along with the Knights of Steel, who will bring the steel drum sounds of Carnaval in the Caribbean. This will be a night of great energy and music! Come celebrate Carnaval with us!

Congratulations go out to Ghandaia on the release of their new CD Uno! They were nice enough to ask us to add some drums to a couple of tracks -- thanks!!! They've also invited us to play at the CD release party, 3/10 at The Vibe. Congratulations!2/17/2003Our musical director Robert Patterson has been a very busy guy - in addition to running the Samba School classes at the Armstrong Community Music School, he is performing with Casamar. They play a very nice mixture of music from around the world. Definitely check them out!
